A key difference between Bernard Pomerance's play, “The Elephant Man,” and Lynch's film is the scene where Mrs. Hans Dettmar played the physically challenging role of John Merrick. Called (what else?) “The Elephant Man,” it won the Tony for best play that year. The portions of Merrick's life presented in The Elephant Man was a small window into who he really was. Kendal disrobes for Merrick, who has no experience with women. Herring read the play of “The Elephant Man” for the first time as a freshman in college for personal reading, but has never seen a theatrical production of the work. There was a play written about the famed Elephant Man, written by Bernard Pomerance in 1979.
